Through the use of AC-3, better known as Dolby Digital, digital television (DTV) has the capability of delivering pristine quality digital audio with a potential dynamic range exceeding 100 decibels on each of its 5.1 channels, equaling or surpassing the performance of a high quality movie theatre. While this looks good on paper, and is referred to as what “Hollywood has always asked for,” it is unclear whether it is appropriate for the typical television viewer. (more…)
